The VillageConnect project is an important step in moving towards the broader Geek’s goal of ‘Broadband for a Billion’.
The VillageConnect initiative plans to implement 100 demonstration villages using very low energy satellite ground systems, powered by solar panels, to provide internet in villages in the developing world to help enhance medical, educational, social and economic facilities and benefits. The preliminary aim of VillageConnect initiative is to establish wireless broadband in 20 villages and potentially two refugee camps in order to validate technology and to establish best practices. Once that is completed, GEEKS will implement wifi in another 80 villages after which it will be well placed to expand the project to operate on a much larger scale.
This initiative involves collaborating with a number of strategic international partners in the ecosystem, working together to identify and procure the necessary components including, for example, low energy satellite ground systems, solar panels, off-grid energy competence, bandwidth backhaul, ground station equipment and competency as well as local partners capable of managing the installations.
Once the Village Connect initiative is firmly established, GEEKS will start to implement Stream For Good (“S4G”), an educational service which leverages the content of appropriate partners to provide practical video and other content focused on improving the lives of rural communities around the world. Correctly curated, the content can have a measured impact and lead to certification in areas such as managing village renewable energy applications, first aid, sanitation, and many other educational areas.
Stream For Good (S4G) focuses tailored content and knowledge to positively reach a billion lives within a decade.
Initially S4G emerged from a service providing conference video streaming for non-profit organizations. Stream for Good has rapidly evolved as a much more powerful initiative leveraging the content of appropriate partners to provide practical video and educational content focused on improving the lives of rural communities around the world.
The right curated content can have a measured impact and lead to certification in areas of village first aid, village sanitation, village renewable energy, village communications service, and other micro-educational areas.
